Sangria 2

1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup water
1 navel orange, thinly sliced
1 lemon, thinly sliced
1 lime, thinly sliced
4 cups dry red wine
(About) 1 1/2 cup chilled sparkling water

Make ahead

Sugar Syrup
Combine sugar and water in small pan and bring to boil, stirring until sugar is disolved. Boil over meduim high heat for 5 minutes. Cool syrup to room temperature.

Soak Fruit
Place sliced fruit in a small bowl and pour sugar syrup over the sliced fruit, then cover and chill for 4 hours.

When it is time to make the sangria
Drain fruit in large sieve set over another bowl and reserve the fruit and the syrup separately.

Fill a large glass pitcher one fourth full with ice. Add wine, fruit and one cup of the reserved syrup.

Stir wine gently with a wooden spoon, mashing the fruit. Then add the sparkling water to taste, starting with one cup.

Serve Sangria in wine glasses with 1 or 2 slices of fruit in each glass
